This blueberry compote recipe is fresh or frozen blueberries, lemon, and a bit of sugar reduced into a simple and sweet sauce that is delightful on anything from breakfast favorites to desserts!
My family did not complain about taste-testing this amazing blueberry compote! And, I tested it many times! It is such a yummy jam and an incredibly easy recipe that yields fantastic results! Honestly, I am kinda sad that I just found this new love this late in life.
Our family has had this compote on many things, from our favorite French toast casserole to pancakes and crepes. We even eat it drizzled over simple oats for a quick and sustaining breakfast. You can use this 4-ingredient blueberry compote on a variety of foods so there’s no worry about leftovers.
For us, this blueberry compote was the gateway to finding a healthier substitute for pancake syrup, and honestly, we are looking back with no regrets(other than stained blueberry mustaches). Within a handful of minutes, we have an antioxidant enriched compote topping our breakfast food that’s lip smacking good! Often, we will forgo the sugar entirely. It’s a sweet, refreshing taste our whole family loves!
How to Make a Simple Blueberry Compote
This blueberry compote recipe comes together effortlessly in one pan with few ingredients for a healthier option to top breakfast sweets and desserts!
Ingredients for Blueberry Compote
- 2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries
- For a thick blueberry compote, fresh blueberries work best. Frozen blueberries are convenient for our family, so we use frozen over fresh berries. Frozen blueberries will take longer to reduce, so plan accordingly.
- 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
- We love to use real lemon juice as often as possible.
- 1 Tablespoon water
- 2 Tablespoons sugar
- For a healthy blueberry compote, omit the sugar. Blueberries are naturally really sweet, and you might not even miss the sugar. (My kids rarely notice a difference!)
Instructions for Easy Blueberry Compote
For a thick and jammy compote: First, in a saucepan on the stove over medium heat, add one cup of blueberries, 1 Tablespoon of water, 1 Tablespoon of lemon juice, and 2 Tablespoons of sugar, and bring it to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes(frozen berries) or 5-8 minutes(fresh blueberries). Stir occasionally.
Then add the second cup of blueberries and simmer for an additional 8 minutes(frozen blueberries) or 4 minutes(fresh blueberries), stirring occasionally. After the compote has reduced and thickened to the desired consistency, remove it from the heat and let the compote cool for 3-5 minutes. The blueberry compote will thicken as it cools, too. Serve warm and enjoy!
For a thin and pourable compote: At the beginning, add both cups of blueberries along with the water, lemon juice, and sugar. Stir. Then simmer for the first 10 minutes(frozen blueberries) or 8 minutes(fresh blueberries) only, stirring frequently. Remove the compote from the heat and set it for 5 minutes. Serve warm and enjoy!
Tips for a Better Experience in Making the Best Blueberry Compote
Using fresh or frozen blueberries can make a huge difference, so I recommend staying by the saucepan the entire time when making the compote. Until you know how those specific blueberries cook down, it might be best to babysit the first batch (I do believe you will make many batches of this scrumptious compote!) and get a feel for making compote.
Do NOT use a wooden spoon or wooden serving utensils or bowls. Blueberry compote tastes amazing but will stain wooden utensils. I recommend using a stainless steel saucepan, glass bowls, and a silicon spatula. If you are a messy cook, wear an apron. Nothing ruins an experience like stained clothes!
