Puppy chow has become a signature dish of mine over the last couple of years. I love that it’s fast to make, simple for everyone to eat and you can easily control the portion size. This is a great dessert for busy moms everywhere!
How to make Puppy Chow or Muddy Buddies
First, let’s just set the record straight. Puppy chow or muddy buddies? Which is it?!?! Puppy chow and muddy buddies are one and the same. There’s no difference. It’s really depends on where you are from and how you grew up so relax we are all right! Now let’s make a some puppy chow.
Ingredients
- 7 cups of rice Chex or rice squares.
- This is one of those times where buying genertic is perfect! I have notice no difference between brand name and genertic. So save your money and buy genertic!
- 1 cup chocolate chips. I use semi-sweet toll house chocolate chips. I believe the name brand melts SO much better. Splurge for the name brand.
- 1/2 cup peanut butter. We are jif lovers.
- 1/4 cup butter melted. Melting the butter first makes the choclate start melting even before you start adding extra heat therefore less chance to burn your chocolate. Yay! I just find its easier too.
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- About 2 cups powdered sugar.
Directions
- In a large bowl add your rice Chex. I like to use my large tupperware bowls with lids. You will need to be able to close your container. If you dont have a container you can use a large brown paper bag or gallon zip lock bags. Set that aside.
- Next, add your butter to a separate medium microwave safe bowl and melt your butter. I do this in 20 second increments.
- Once the butter is melted, add your chocolate chips, peanut butter, and vanilla. Microwave for 40 seconds. Mix throughly. Then microwave for 20 seconds at a time until all the chocolate chips are melted and the mixture is creamy. Mix inbetween each heating.
- Pour the melted chocolate and peanut butter on the rice Chex and carefully mix until all the cereal is coated evenly.
- Next, sprinkle the powdered sugar on the cereal. Close your lid tight and shake. I will shake vigorously to break up any clumps and get everything coated evenly. Then I will add extra powdered sugar 1/4 cup at a time if the pieces are not white and there still uncovered chocolate.
- Now you can dump the puppy chow to another clean bowl and leave uncovered for at least 10-15 minutes to let the chocolate harden. Store covered for up to a week. Serve anytime and enjoy!
