How to Make an Easy Sausage Bread
This is an excellent beginner appetizer recipe and tests some basic cooking and baking skills. It’s a great way to learn the basics of browning meat and working with dough. There’s plenty of room to experiment with flavor combinations, and the results are tasty!
Ingredients for Sausage Bread
- 1 pound ground sausage
- This sausage bread recipe works with a variety of ground sausages. Use your favorite Italian, breakfast, hot, or mild ground sausage. They all give off great flavor and work!
- Italian ground sausage is perfect for a party appetizer, breakfast sausage works well for a brunch table finger food, and a mild sausage is an excellent idea for family meals! Want to do a game-day appetizer? Try a hot sausage for kick and lots of flavor!
- 13-16 ounces of pizza or bread dough
- You can use a thawed, premade dough or a homemade bread dough recipe, like our peasant bread. If using this peasant bread recipe, add flour after the first rise to make this sticky dough roll out and shape. You’ll need about 1-2 cups extra.
- Handful of baby spinach, optional
- 2 cups of shredded mozzarella cheese
- Switch up the flavors by adding different types of cheese. Try pepper jack cheese for more adventurous eaters and a little kick.
- Freshly grated cheese melts better! Our family tries to grate our cheeses fresh. It tastes better, and our cheese has no foreign additives! We love this simple cheese grater. Kids from 4-18 can operate it. We have had it for years, and it’s still going strong.
- 1 egg, beaten for an egg wash
Instructions for Sausage Bread
First, brown the ground sausage in a 10 to 12-inch skillet until it is no longer pink, and drain off any excess grease. Then add in the optional spinach and cook it with the sausage on medium until it is wilted. Set the skillet aside to cool.
On a large piece of parchment paper (works well for pre-made doughs) or a lightly floured surface (works well for homemade dough) work, roll out and shape the dough into a large rectangle (9×12 inches or larger) with the longer side facing you. The dough should be 1/4-inch thick.
Then, evenly sprinkle the meat and spinach on top, followed by the shredded cheese, leaving a 1-inch bare edge of dough around the rectangle.
Now, roll the sausage bread dough cinnamon-roll style by rolling the long edge down from the top edge, being careful not to rip the dough. Once you get to the bottom, bring the lip up and pinch it into the dough roll. Then, turn the bread loaf seam-side down and place it on a large piece of parchment paper(if you haven’t done so already). Next, tuck each side of the dough roll under to secure the sausage and cheese in the bread loaf.
Next, slide the bread onto a large baking sheet. Using a pastry brush, brush the dough with the egg.
Finally, bake the sausage bread at 350°F for 25-30 minutes until the loaf is golden brown and the bread is cooked through. Remove from the oven and let it cool for 10 minutes before cutting into 1-inch slices. Serve warm and enjoy!
How to Store Sausage Bread
Store sausage bread in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Reheat in the microwave or oven until warmed through.
