This White Chocolate Trail Mix recipe consists of white chocolate-coated pretzels, rice Chex, and Cheerios tossed with holiday M&Ms and optional peanuts. It’s a classic holiday snack whose sweet and salty flavors make it addictive!
This White Chocolate Trail Mix recipe is also known as White Chocolate Chex Mix or White Trash. A “white trash” recipe, typically referring to a sweet and salty snack mix made with cereals, pretzels, M&Ms, and white chocolate, is called that because it’s made with inexpensive, readily available ingredients that anyone can afford, giving it a connotation of being a “low-class” or “trashy” snack mix, despite its deliciousness; the “white” part refers to the white chocolate used as a coating. Just remember, this is just a playful term and doesn’t reflect any negative judgment on the taste or quality of the treat. It’s amazing!
We have made this White Chocolate Trail Mix for years, maybe decades, and it’s always a hit. It’s the perfect amount of sweet and salty. It can be broken into many different serving sizes, making it great for little appetites. It’s a kid-friendly snack that’s affordable and feeds a crowd. The trail mix consists of pantry staples that you can keep on hand. Plus, this holiday snack travels and keeps well, so you can make it ahead and not be stressed during this busy time of year!
How to Make an Easy White Chocolate Trail Mix, aka White Trash
This easy white chocolate trail mix is an easy, no-baking, and no-cooking recipe. It requires measuring the pretzels, cereal, M&Ms, and other add-ins and then melting the almond bark. We love this recipe for quick last-minute parties, homemade holiday gift ideas, and movie nights!
One significant difference between my recipe and other White Chocolate Trail Mix recipes is that I doubled the amount of pretzels and cereal. Before, the chocolate seemed overpowering; however, now, there is more of a balance between the sweet and salty flavors. It’s an even more affordable snack idea. And this makes a party-size batch of snack mix!
Ingredients to White Chocolate Trail Mix recipe
Remember, if you want more chocolate coating on your trail mix, cut back on the pretzels or cereal. It is always easier to add more cereal once you are mixing in the melted chocolate. It is harder to take away cereal at the end.
- 5 cups mini pretzel twists
- 5 cups rice Chex or rice squares
- I recently used both brand-name rice Chex and genetic rice squares. I prefer the generic; they looked and smelled better. It’s weird to say that’s the truth!
- 4 cups plain Cheerios
- 1 1/2 cups(10 ounce bag) M&Ms
- 1-2 cups peanuts(optional)
- If adding, cut back on one cup of cereal or pretzels.
- Many little kids don’t like peanuts, and they tend to go to waste around here, so I opt to leave them out of this recipe. However, they are a nice salty add-in, and many mature taste buds prefer them, so choose to customize this recipe as you see fit.
- 24 ounces almond bark (1 package)
- Sprinkles for garnish
Instructions for White Chocolate Trail Mix
First, in a large bowl, combine the mini pretzel twists, rice squares, Cheerios, and optional salted peanuts and toss well.
Then, break apart the almond bark in the package. Once broken apart, place all pieces in a microwave-safe bowl and melt them according to package directions. **Stove top directions: Place pieces in a medium saucepan over low heat and stir constantly until smooth and melted**
Next, pour melted almond bark over the cereal mixture and mix well until all pieces are evenly coated. Add in half of the M&Ms and toss.
Finally, spread out in a single layer onto parchment paper on a rimmed baking sheet or the countertop. (This is a large batch, so I use my counter for more room.) Before the chocolate hardens, sprinkle with the remaining M&Ms and holiday sprinkles. Let it sit for one hour or until it’s completely hardened. Break into pieces and serve. Enjoy!!
Storing White Chocolate Trail Mix
Store this White Chocolate Trail Mix in an airtight container at room temperature, out of the sun, for up to three weeks.
