Made with a coleslaw mix of cabbage, red cabbage, and shredded carrots and covered in a creamy celery seed dressing, this easy homemade coleslaw recipe comes together quickly for a fresh, crisp side dish. This classic coleslaw pairs well with BBQ, fried fish, or burgers.

I love this easy recipe. It’s a good, solid, creamy coleslaw recipe that works for BBQs, holidays, and family dinners. It’s good made ahead(up to 2 days in advance, giving time for the flavors to blend) for a quick side dish. This is a great recipe for leftover cabbage or coleslaw mix. It’s only a handful of ingredients and a few minutes to mix for a complete side. This is a classic coleslaw recipe with an easy homemade dressing that works!

How to Make Traditional Coleslaw for Home and Parties

Easy Homemade Coleslaw takes just a few minutes to mix. It can then be served right away, a few hours later, or the next day, after which the flavors will blend, and the cabbage will become slightly tender.

Ingredients for an Easy Coleslaw Recipe

  • 14 ounces coleslaw mix
  • OR 5 cups thinly sliced cabbage
  • 1 cup thinly sliced red cabbage
  • 1 cup shredded carrots

Dressing Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise or Miracle Whip
  • 1 Tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1/2 Tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 Tablespoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon coarse black pepper
    • Can use regular pepper as well
  • 1/2 teaspoon celery seed
    • Add a lot of flavor to the dish as it sits.

Instructions for an Easy Homemamde Coleslaw

Combine all the dressing ingredients in a bowl and thoroughly mix.

Then add the coleslaw mix to the bowl and mix until the cabbage is well coated. Cover and chill the coleslaw in the refrigerator for 1-2 hours to let the flavors blend.

How to Store Coleslaw

Store colelsaw covered in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. It is not recommended to freeze coleslaw.

Easy Homemade Coleslaw Recipe

This is a classic colesalw recipe that comes togetehr in less than 20 minutes for a quickside to your next family dinner, BBQ, or holiday party!

Ingredients
  

Coleslaw Ingredients

  • 14 ounces coleslaw mix

Or replace coleslaw mix with…

  • 5 cups cabbage shredded
  • 1 cup red cabbage shredded
  • 1 cup carrots shredded

Coleslaw Dressing

  • ½ cup mayonnaise/ Miracle Whip
  • 1 Tablespoon vinegar
  • ½ Tablespoon apple cinder vinegar
  • 1 Tablespoon sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon coarse pepper
  • ½ teaspoon celery seed

Instructions
 

  • Combine all the dressing ingredients in a bowl and thoroughly mix.
  • Then add the coleslaw mix to the bowl and mix until the cabbage is well coated. Cover and chill the coleslaw in the refrigerator for 1-2 hours to let the flavors blend.

Notes

Don’t forget the celery seed. It adds a lot of flavor.  
This coleslaw can be served immediately, but it is recommended that it be chilled for 1-2 hours so the flavors blend.
